Projection Makes Perception

One of my favorite sections of A Course in Miracles says, “Projection makes perception.” This means that our thoughts create our world. Our thoughts are projected out of us and onto the world, so we perceive what we think.

In ACIM, it says:

“The world you see is what you gave it, nothing more than that. But though it is no more than that, it is not less. Therefore, to you it is important. It is the witness to your state of mind, the outside picture of an inward condition.”

Here’s an example of how projection makes perception: I stub my toe at 6am. I get pissed off, and think about what a terrible day I’m having already.

The thought “This is a terrible day” becomes the filter through which I see everything that happens to me. I project that thought out into the world, and begin to perceive everything that happens to me through the filter of “This is a terrible day.” So everything from mfiancé eating the last of the good cereal to my mistake on a project at work confirms that I am having a terrible day. Everything I see makes me think I’m having a bad day, so I keep projecting that and seeing my world through that filter. This locks me into a cycle of doom.

“This is a terrible day”⇒Bad Day Filter⇒I perceive bad things happening⇒”This is a terrible day”

How can I stop this snowball effect?

You guessed it—forgiveness!

Forgiveness is the willingness to hand over our perceptions to our Higher Self/Inner Guide/Holy Spirit. It is the willingness to change the filter through which we see our world.

It is simply a change of mind. You don’t have to be anywhere, say anything special, or close your eyes. All you need to do is think: “I’m willing to see this differently.”

“I am willing to see differently”⇒ Forgiveness Filter⇒I perceive situations in my life differently & remain at peace

Your willingness gives your Higher Self the green light to start working miracles (shifts in perception). You start to see things differently~see them through a different filter~because you have changed your mind. You’ve changed the thought that was projected out to create your perception, so your perception can change.

“Seek not to change the world, but choose to change your mind about the world.”
